Italian Americans adopted their new land with passion and patriotism. Many enthusiastically and willingly served in the military throughout the decades on behalf of their country. Others chose public service as law enforcement officers and firemen. In the early decades of the 20th century, Italian Americans proudly took jobs as sanitation workers and custodians, truck drivers and civil servants to ensure their children had the opportunities they were unable to afford as humble first-generation immigrants.
